Geocode a spreadsheet without code
Add latitude, longitude and accuracy columns to a CSV or Excel file in your browser. The file never leaves your machine; only the address text goes to the API.
What you need
A CSV, TSV or Excel file with addresses in it, and a free key from dash.geocode.net. The free plan covers 10,000 rows a month, with no card.
Steps
- Open the spreadsheet geocoder and paste your key at the top right. It is saved in your browser only.
- Drop the file on the page. The tool reads it locally and guesses which columns hold the address. One full-address column works; so do separate street, city, state and ZIP columns. Fix anything it guessed wrong.
- Tick the columns you want appended: Census (FIPS, tract, block group, ZCTA), congressional district, state legislative districts, school districts, time zone. Each append is included in the one unit per row.
- Press Geocode. Rows go to the API in batches of 1,000 and a progress bar counts them down. A few hundred thousand rows is fine in a modern browser.
- Review the points on the map, then download CSV or Excel. The new columns are added to the right of yours:
geo_lat,geo_lng,geo_accuracy,geo_accuracy_type,geo_formatted(the standardised address), and whatever you ticked, prefixed by append (census_,cd_,school_,timezone).
Reading the accuracy column
| accuracy_type | Meaning |
|---|---|
rooftop |
An address point matched the house number |
range_interpolation |
Placed along the street's house-number range |
nearest_rooftop_match |
The closest known number on the street |
street_center |
The street matched, the number did not |
place, zip, county, state |
Only the containing area is known |
Sort by this column before you map anything. A handful of ZIP centroids among rooftop points is normal; a column full of them usually means the address column is missing the city or state.
Coordinates to addresses
The same tool runs in reverse. Choose "Coordinates to addresses", point it at your latitude and longitude columns, and it returns the nearest address with a distance for each row.
