Data sources and licences
Every source behind geocode.net, its licence, what "you can keep the results" means, and the attribution lines for the two sources that ask for one.
The sources
| Source | Used for | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| National Address Database (US DOT) | Rooftop and parcel address points | Public domain |
| OpenAddresses, selected US sources | Address points where NAD has gaps | Only sources without share-alike terms are included |
| TIGER/Line (US Census Bureau) | Street segments with house-number ranges; place, county, state and ZCTA boundaries; tracts and block groups; congressional, state legislative and school district boundaries | Public domain |
| timezone-boundary-builder | IANA time zone polygons | ODbL (derived from OpenStreetMap), served as a produced work with attribution |
| DB-IP City Lite | IP geolocation | CC BY 4.0 |
There is no OpenStreetMap data in the address index. The map tiles on this website, and in maps made with the map embed generator, come from OpenFreeMap (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL). They are credited on the map and on exported images, and they are not part of the API.
What "you can keep the results" means
Coordinates, standardised addresses and appended geographies returned by the API are derived from public-domain data, and no licence we hold obliges you to delete, refresh or share them. You may store them for as long as you like, in any system, on every plan. The time zone and IP results are produced works from attributed sources; keeping and using them is fine, redistributing the underlying databases is not.
Attribution
If you display IP geolocation or time zone results publicly, carry these lines somewhere reasonable, such as a footer or an about page:
- IP Geolocation by DB-IP, https://db-ip.com, CC BY 4.0
- Time zone boundaries from timezone-boundary-builder, ODbL
Current index
The API's /health endpoint reports the exact release of each source in the live index. At the time of writing: National Address Database release r24 (September 2026), TIGER/Line 2025, DB-IP October 2026.
