How it works

Your position is matched to the nearest address, and that address is tested against the Census Bureau's county boundaries (TIGER/Line 2025, 2020 geographies). The answer uses the county's full legal name, so Louisiana's parishes, Alaska's boroughs and census areas, and Virginia's independent cities come out right: Richmond city and Richmond County are different places.

In Connecticut, the Census Bureau switched from the eight historical counties to nine planning regions in 2022, and that is what you get there.

In your code

curl "https://api.geocode.net/v1/reverse?lat=39.1582&lng=-75.5247&fields=census" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY"
{ "fields": { "census": { "state_fips": "10", "county_fips": "10001",
    "county": "Kent", "county_name": "Kent County", "tract": "10001041300" } } }

county is the bare name, county_name the name with its suffix, and county_fips the five-digit code to join other data on.

Notes

  • Many cities cross county lines, and New York City spans five counties. The answer is for your position, not for your whole city.
  • In most states, property tax, courts, vehicle registration and elections are run by the county, so this tells you which office to call.
  • Nothing is requested until you click, and the position is not stored.
