How it works

IP geolocation is city-level, not street-level: it says roughly where a connection enters the internet. It is enough to pick a language, a currency, a time zone or a nearby store before anyone types an address. The data is DB-IP City Lite, refreshed monthly; the time zone comes from the same polygons as the rest of the API.

In your code

curl "https://api.geocode.net/v1/ip?ip=8.8.8.8" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY"
{ "ip": "8.8.8.8", "country": { "code": "US", "name": "United States", "is_eu": false },
  "region": { "name": "California" }, "city": "Mountain View",
  "location": { "lat": 37.422, "lng": -122.085 },
  "timezone": { "name": "America/Los_Angeles", "utc_offset": "-07:00" }, "languages": ["en", "es"] }

Leave ip out to locate the caller's own address.

Notes

  • One unit per lookup, the same key as geocoding.
  • Expect the city to be right most of the time and the coordinates to be the city's, not the user's. For a precise position ask the browser, then reverse geocode it.
