How it works

Your browser reports a position: from GPS on a phone, from nearby Wi-Fi networks on a laptop. The reverse geocoder returns the nearest address point within 300 metres, else the nearest street, else the town, and says which with an accuracy type and the distance in metres. A rooftop match a few metres away is your building; a street match means no address point was close.

A phone outdoors is usually placed within a few metres, a laptop indoors within 20 to 100. If the answer is the house next door, that is why: type your coordinates or click your roof on the map.

In your code

curl "https://api.geocode.net/v1/reverse?lat=39.1582&lng=-75.5247" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY"
{ "results": [ { "formatted": "1 W Loockerman ST, Dover, DE 19904",
                 "location": { "lat": 39.158146, "lng": -75.52465 },
                 "accuracy_type": "rooftop", "fields": { "distance_m": 7.4 } } ] }

Notes

  • In an emergency, call 911 rather than looking up an address here. Most dispatch centres receive a mobile caller's location from the phone network.
  • Nothing is requested until you click, and the position is used for this one lookup, not stored.
  • US addresses only.
