Free tool · GET /v1/geocode?fields=timezone

Find the time zone for an address.

Free time zone lookup by US address or coordinates. IANA zone name, current UTC offset, abbreviation and whether daylight saving is observed.

Free for a few lookups a minute on a shared key. Need more? Get a free key for 10,000 a month, or run a whole file through the spreadsheet geocoder.

Or use your own location.

How it works

The address becomes a point; the point is tested against the IANA time zone polygons from the timezone-boundary-builder project. The response gives the zone name you can hand to any date library, plus the offset in effect right now and whether the zone observes daylight saving (Arizona, most of it, does not).

In your code

curl "https://api.geocode.net/v1/geocode?q=1600+Pennsylvania+Ave+NW+Washington+DC&fields=timezone" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY"
{ "fields": { "timezone": { "name": "America/New_York", "abbreviation": "EDT",
    "utc_offset": "-04:00", "utc_offset_seconds": -14400, "observes_dst": true } } }

Have coordinates instead of an address? GET /v1/reverse?lat=…&lng=…&fields=timezone does the same from a point.

Notes

  • Use the zone name, not the offset, when you store it. The offset changes twice a year; the zone does not.
  • Scheduling calls, delivery windows and "local time" columns in exports are the usual reasons to want this.
