How it works

When the page loads, it estimates your time zone from your IP address. That is right for most people, because zones are large. Near a zone boundary (the Florida panhandle, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, the Dakotas, Idaho) the city your IP points to can be on the other side of the line, so the exact-location button checks your own position against the IANA time zone polygons from the timezone-boundary-builder project.

If your device's clock is set to a different zone from the one you are in, as a traveller's laptop often is, the answer says so.

In your code

curl "https://api.geocode.net/v1/reverse?lat=33.4484&lng=-112.0740&fields=timezone" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY"
{ "fields": { "timezone": { "name": "America/Phoenix", "abbreviation": "MST",
    "utc_offset": "-07:00", "utc_offset_seconds": -25200, "observes_dst": false } } }

Notes

  • Store the zone name, not the offset. The offset changes twice a year where daylight saving is observed; the name does not.
  • Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe daylight saving.
  • Nothing is requested until you click, and the position is not stored.
